Today's Lenten Stational Church: Statio ad Sanctam Praxedem

On Monday of Holy Week, the Church gathers at Basilica of Santa Prassede, a house-turned-sanctuary that embodies the earliest life of the Roman Church. Built over the home of Saint Praxedes, one of the original parish tituli, it became a refuge for persecuted Christians and later a treasury of martyrs’ relics, especially under Pope Paschal I. The basilica’s mosaics, relics, and sacred spaces proclaim the unity of Christ’s Passion with the witness of His saints. The liturgy of the day deepens this meaning. The prophecy of the Suffering Servant reveals Christ’s obedience amid suffering, while the Gospel recalls the hospitality of Bethany—echoed here in the charity of Praxedes and her sister. This station teaches that to receive Christ is not merely to honour Him, but to share in His Passion, as the martyrs did, offering fidelity even unto suffering. For the pilgrim, Santa Prassede is a call to conversion. The relics, the well of martyr’s blood, and the vision of Christ in glory all testify that sacrifice united to Christ leads to victory. As Holy Week begins in earnest, the Church invites the faithful not only to contemplate the Passion, but to enter it—through hidden acts of obedience, charity, and steadfast faith, trusting that beyond the Cross lies resurrection and glory.
