Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer in India as well as worldwide and it is also one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths. Historically, lung cancer has been considered a disease which is related to smoking, but nowadays the incidence has been rising in younger population as well as non-smokers. So, today we are here to discuss what all precautions can we take for early detection as well as treatment of lung cancer. So what are the risk factors for lung cancer? Smoking still remains one of the biggest causes of lung cancer and of all the lung cancer cases we see today, 85% of cases are seen in patients with the history of smoking. It could be either cigarettes or baby or hookah, anything. And risk of lung cancer is directly related to number of cigarette smoke per day as well as number of ears smoked. And not only active smoking, but passive smoking also significantly increases the risk of lung cancer by about 20 to 30%. And other causes of lung cancer apart from smoking include air pollution, indoor smoke from Chula's and certain other chemicals like asbestos which are used in construction, etc. Apart from all these environmental factors, genetic factors also play a significant role in contributing to lung cancer. Coming to science and symptoms of lung cancer, so persistent cough which is not really by common medications and is persistent for many weeks, chest pain, shortness of breath, persistent fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, all these can be symptoms of lung cancer. So if you have any of these symptoms, do not wait and consult a doctor immediately. Whenever you see a doctor, he or she might prescribe a certain number of tests like chest x-ray, CT scans, biopsy, bronchoscopy which help us to reach to a diagnosis and also establish the stage of the disease. Nowadays high-end investigations like PET scans are also available which help us in better staging of lung cancer. Molecular testing which includes testing for specific mutations in lung cancer are also nowadays done. These help in better deciding which treatment option is best for the patient. So what are the treatment options? In early stages, surgery is durable in lung cancer. If surgery is not feasible and disease is localised to lungs, we can go for radiation and chemotherapy. Other nowadays many new-end investigations are available which include immunotherapy. Immunotherapy means that a therapy which activates patients own immunity to act against cancer cells and targeted therapies are also available which targets specific mutations seen in cancer cells. So at the end, I would like to say that timely action can save lives. Do not ignore a cough which is persistent for weeks. If you are a smoker, quit smoking today and those who have been treated for lung cancer and are cured at present should also not ignore and see the doctor for timely follow-ups. With that, I would like to end today's speech. I hope this information is helpful.
