Description
A peacock flounder in the Galapagos Islands shows why they are the master of disguise. This fish glides across the rocks and sand until it spots a patch of sand big enough for what it has in mind. It turns and positions itself flat on the bottom and then performs a series of shudders that stirs up the sand around it. The sand covers a large part of the fish. It is capable of changing colour and pattern to match the surface on which it rests. This makes it almost impossible to see.
Flounders begin their lives with bodies that allow them to swim vertically. As they mature, one eye migrates to the other side and the flounder swims horizontally. Its eyes are on stem-like appendages so that they protrude above the sand. Flounders are often difficult to see. This one was in motion, out in the open water when the lucky scuba diver with the camera caught it on video.
