Byzantine Saints: Martyr Alexander and Virgin Martyr Antonina at Constantinople (10 June)

Saints Alexander and Antonina are among the most inspiring martyrs of the early Church. On June 10, we commemorate the holy Virgin Martyr Antonina and the soldier Alexander, who courageously gave their lives for Jesus Christ during the final years of Roman persecution. Saint Antonina of Asia Minor was arrested for refusing to worship pagan idols and boldly confessed Christ before Governor Fesus. When the governor attempted to force her into dishonor, God raised up an unlikely protector—Alexander, a Christian soldier. Risking his own life, Alexander entered her prison cell, exchanged clothing with her, and enabled her escape. When discovered, Alexander endured brutal torture. Through divine inspiration, Antonina returned and stood beside him. Together they suffered martyrdom for Christ, their hands cut off, covered in pitch, and cast into a fiery pit. Their witness reminds Christians of the power of courage, purity, sacrifice, and unwavering faith in the face of persecution.
