In this video, I share how I use ChatGPT as a working photographer to save time, reduce mental overload, and move forward on important business tasks that often get delayed. I use ChatGPT as a collaborator rather than a replacement for creative or strategic thinking, across the following key areas.
Time-Savers and Creative Assistance
Visual communication and mood board support
AI-generated visuals are sometimes used to communicate creative direction when the exact reference image does not exist. This approach helps teams, editors, and clients clearly understand the intended vision. ChatGPT can also used for early-stage brainstorming when developing concepts for upcoming shoots.
Lighting analysis and creative experimentation
Reference images can be analyzed as if by an expert lighting director to break down light direction, modifiers, and overall lighting structure. These suggestions are then adapted to real-world constraints such as limited gear or a specific number of lights. While not always accurate, they may be a good jumping-off point.
Client communication and preparation materials
Pre-shoot guides, FAQs, and client emails are created by providing brand voice examples and refining drafts through iteration. The goal is clearer communication, a more confident client experience, and finally completing tasks that have lived on my to-do list for far too long.
Production planning and business strategy
Shoot schedules, production timelines, pricing structures, and client journeys are created extremely quickly by assigning ChatGPT roles such as producer or marketing consultant. Shoot schedules alone (on big commercial shoots) can take hours to create, and now only take a few seconds.
More Successful Utilization
Many photographers only scratch the surface of ChatGPT’s capabilities, using it primarily for research or grammar checks. Providing clear context, constraints, and role assignments significantly improves the quality of results. Iteration is essential, and the first draft is rarely the final version.
AI functions best as a support tool rather than a decision-maker. For me, the primary benefit is freeing up time and mental space so I can focus more fully on creative work.
