Description

The battle of V8 engines - cross-plane vs flat-plane; which one’s got the edge? V8 engines come in two popular varieties, cross-plane and flat-plane. The difference comes down to the crankshaft; in a cross-plane, the crank pins are separated by 90 degrees; looked at from the side, it resembles a plus sign, or cross. With a flat-plane crank, the crank pins are separated by 180 degrees; looked at from the side, it all lines up on a single flat plane. Cross-planes tend to be better balanced and smoother running, though their heavy crankshafts tend to limit how high they can rev. Flat-plane cranks have more vibration, but with a lightweight design that allows them to rev high, and a smooth firing order that alternates cylinder banks after each cylinder fires. The difference in firing order is a stark contrast, giving each a distinctive sound! What's your pick?
