From Native Americans in the US to migrants facing deportation today, the idea of “illegality” has always been decided by those in power. Countries built by migrants now label migrants as criminals. Artists who speak up are dismissed as “performative.” Silence, meanwhile, is celebrated as maturity. In this video, I explain why even so-called performative activism matters, why artists questioning power is necessary, and why calling human beings illegal is morally and historically dishonest. The real question is not whether artists should speak. The real question is why so many choose not to.
