This documentary follows archaeologist Peter Eeckhout to Tikal, a major Maya city in Guatemala, where new discoveries are reshaping our understanding of this pre-Columbian civilization. Known for their knowledge of eclipses, solstices and equinoxes, the Maya developed advanced astronomy and mathematics over nearly two millennia. At the heart of the investigation is the “Lost World” complex, long thought to be an astronomical observatory. Through decades of research, archaeologist Vilma Fialko reveals that its purpose was different. The structures, while linked to solar alignments, were not designed for precise scientific observation. Excavations uncover evidence of rituals, including traces of human sacrifice, and inscriptions linked to King Chak Tok Ich'aak II.
