Description
► The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner has opened an inquiry into whether Reform UK leader Nigel Farage breached the House of Commons Code of Conduct over the gift.
Mr Farage received the money weeks before announcing he would stand as a candidate in the 2024 general election. He has claimed the gift was to cover his personal security costs, meaning he did not need to declare it.
Other parties believe the money falls within the rules requiring MPs to declare any relevant gifts they received in the 12 months before entering parliament.
A Reform UK spokesperson said: “Mr Farage’s office is in communications with the parliamentary commissioner for standards. He has always been clear that this was a personal, unconditional gift and no rules were broken. We look forward to this being put to bed once and for all.”
