GRANDPA MISSING 43 Years [Murdered or Accident?] The Case of Thomas Privitera

On December 13, 1981, Thomas Privitera was last seen driving his 1971 Bronze Oldsmobile in Westhampton, New York. He was heading toward his home on Doris Drive in Mastic Beach but never arrived. It was a cold night with potential ice on the roads, leading investigators and family alike to wonder for decades if a tragic accident on the slick backroads led to his disappearance. The Search for an Accident - Our team arrived in Long Island with a strategy focused on the road conditions from that night. Given the freezing temperatures and darkness, the most logical theory was that Thomas lost control of his vehicle and slid into one of the many waterways lining his route. We concentrated our efforts on tracing his likely path, looking for any body of water deep enough to conceal a vehicle for over 40 years. Systematic Elimination of Targets - The search began at a location featuring three distinct bodies of water. While they looked promising on the map, on-site inspection revealed they were too shallow to hide a car. We moved to a second location that featured a deep hole—a much more viable hiding spot. Our sonar ball detected an object rising nearly to the surface, creating a strong potential target. We deployed a boat to scan the area thoroughly and used a magnet to verify the hit. After a detailed search, the object was determined not to be the missing Oldsmobile. Private Property and Timeline Checks - Moving down the list, we investigated a private property along the route. Although we could not film the interaction, the owner provided valuable information, stating that dive teams frequently use the location for training and the water is crystal clear. He confirmed there was no vehicle in those depths. Subsequent locations were ruled out through aerial drone reconnaissance and historical analysis. One search area was deemed inaccessible due to a steep embankment that a car likely couldn't have crossed. Another nearby lake, which initially seemed like a possibility, was identified as a newer construction built after Thomas disappeared in 1981, making it impossible for his car to be there. Wildwood Lake and a Shift in Theory - With the primary roadside targets cleared, the team turned to Wildwood Lake, the only remaining major body of water in the immediate vicinity. This was considered a "Hail Mary" attempt. We waded nearly 25 yards into the lake, but the water remained less than three feet deep. The shallow nature of the local terrain made the accident theory increasingly difficult to support. A Call from the Family - Two days after the initial search, the direction of the case changed. We received a phone call from Thomas’s grandson, who provided crucial details that challenged the accident theory. He clarified that Thomas’s last known location was his aunt's house. The family shared long-standing suspicions regarding the aunt and her boyfriend at the time, suggesting that foul play might be involved. We are now regrouping to investigate these new leads.
