Description
How to reduce your air intake noise quickly and cheaply on motorbikes like the AJP PR7, Yamaha enduro four strokes and the Kove 450 Rally! Welcome to Cross Training Adventure, we are into all things dual sport and adventure on the east coast of Australia. Some riders like a loud motorbike. Others hate it. If you prefer some peace and quiet then sometimes it's not just the exhaust pipe. On certain motorbikes the air intake can be very noisy too - especially when the airbox is above the engine. Owners often complain about air intake noise on motorbikes like the Yamaha enduro models, Kove 450 Rally, Yamaha MT-09. Some riders love the air intake noise. I chose weather seal because it's 'closed cell' foam. It doesn't let air pass through. If you use a normal 'open cell' foam you might find it deteriorates quickly. Also I'm not sure if any fuel fumes might deteriorate this foam over time and I might need to replace it with a foam that is chemical-resistant. If so, I'll post about this later in the pinned first comment. For example my brother hates loud exhausts but he actually likes the loud air intake noise on his AJP PR7. If you own an AJP PR7 we'll be covering a pile of modifications and tips in coming videos. Ever had a motorbike with loud intake noise? Did you like it or hate it? Did you try any mods? Let us know in the comments. Ducatis with aftermarket filters, and the AJP PR7.
Keen on adventure riding in Australia? Check out our vids. There are advantages to an airbox above the engine for us off-road riders. Less dust. It's very easy to access. And finally this is all very subjective! Deep water crossings. If you like dual sport riding in Australia then you might like our adventure riding vids. And if you drop the motorbike in water there's a better chance of not sucking any water in. Manufacturers make some really bad mistakes. and there is a lot of dodgy crap being sold out there. Instead of glowing dual sport reviews for kickbacks or free product, we will try to keep the buggers honest. So subscribe. Or don't subscribe to our Cross Training Adventure riding channel. The main thing is get out and ride while you can with dual sport riding or Adventure riding in Australia, Canada, Vietnam, Romania and beyond! So check out Cross Training Adventure. And it usually lowers the centre of gravity because the fuel tank can be mounted lower on the motorbike.
But you might find the loud air intake annoying.
Check out our reviews of various adventure bikes and dual sport bikes. Here is a $5 fix using adhesive weather seal from our Bunnings hardware store.
Clean the plastic thoroughly. We used isopropyl alcohol.
Lightly sand the plastic.
Then apply the self-adhesive weather seal in strips.
Did it work? Yes! I found the air intake noise very irritating and it's barely noticeable now. I would estimate the noise has been cut by at least 75%. I tried to get a decibel reading but the exhaust noise made it impossible.
A few important points. This foam was 6mm thick and there was plenty of clearance between the air filter and the airbox lid to ensure a good airflow. But I think motorbikes like the WR and YZ Yamaha four strokes may have very little clearance so a thinner seal may be needed. We have occasional detours to places like Vietnam, Cambodia, Romania and Canada. This is one of our three channels, there's also a Cross Training Trials channel, and a Cross Training Enduro channel. All three are equally dodgy. We are the 27th most watched dirt channel in Uzbekistan. We have won the polished turd award five years in a row. And we have a world record 25 class action lawsuits for inaccurate information. We think the whole motorbike scene is getting too commercial. So called dual sport riding reviews are just glossy ads nowdays. Everyone is trying to sell you stuff you don't need, convince you to buy the latest model with anodized coffee cup holders for your trips to the coffee shop. Of course if you are cashed up and into bling, go for it. All we are saying is there's also the budget option for adventure riding. So the Cross Training Adventure focus is just get out there and have fun on two wheels. Instead of obsessing over the latest blinged out Beemer, which tyres to fit or spending a fortune on your suspension or billet alloy gas cap. So most of our adventure riding vids will feature the much loved bush pig, the Suzuki DR650. And we've done a 10 part series on how to unleash the mighty beast that lurks within. What else? Cross Training Adventure actively avoids sponsorship. We like doing seriously critical reviews.
