Hey music lovers! đđ¶ Welcome to TOOST Music
Where the legends never fade â and the music never ends.
The Timeless cultural series - this short, is about the Rumba Of Afro Cuban Dance
Thatâs Rumba â born in the 1880s among the former slave communities in Havana and Matanzas, Cuba.
Hereâs the twist: Rumba was illegal in the 1920s â âbodily contortionsâ and African drums were banned in public in 1925 by President Machado.
Yet the rhythm couldnât be silenced. It still thrived among the streets as a âpartyâ ; the voice of dance-oriented music styles was stronger than ever heard in poor neighborhoods of Cuba. These syncretic styles would be referred to as "rumba", a word that also meant "party". Performed by freed Africans using drums made from everyday objects and the clave, it was a spontaneous, ritual expression of joy and resistance .
