Description

This video documents the test flight of an ex-Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Lockheed AP-3C Orion Partol and Anti-Submarine Aircraft, following a months-long maintenance. The AP-3C Orion is a long-range maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft operated by the RAAF. Based on the Lockheed P-3 Orion, the AP-3C variant features advanced mission systems for surveillance, reconnaissance, and electronic intelligence. In total 18 AP-3Cs were delivered to the RAAF, and they are now all retired from service. After retirement several were transferred to the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS), where they are preserved in excellent condition. Aircraft Brief History - After over 16,000 hours of marine patrol work with the RAAF, this specific AP-3C Orion was donated to the HARS in 2017 and is the only one of its type flying in Australia, now with civil registration (actually the ONLY one flying with a Museum in the World.) - from HARS facebook. The HARS-operated AP-3C continues to appear at airshows across Australia, offering the public a rare chance to witness this legendary maritime patrol aircraft in action — a tribute to over four decades of Australian service. The Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS), based at Shellharbour Airport, New South Wales, is dedicated to preserving Australia’s rich aviation heritage — especially aircraft that served with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Its impressive collection includes the Lockheed Super Constellation “Connie”, Boeing 747-438 “City of Canberra”, Douglas DC-3 and DC-4, de Havilland Caribou, and several former RAAF maritime patrol aircraft such as the Lockheed P-2 Neptune, Grumman S-2 Tracker, and AP-3C Orion. HARS also operates the UH-1H “Huey” helicopters that honor Australia’s Vietnam-era service, and the Southern Cross replica, celebrating Sir Charles Kingsford Smith’s pioneering trans-Pacific flight. Many of these aircraft remain airworthy, allowing HARS to bring Australia’s aviation history vividly to life at airshows and public events. HARS website: https://hars.org.au/
