Christians are getting persecuted in Nigeria and Trump just sent troops to save them. That’s the rhetoric right-wingers and evangelicals in Nigeria used to convince the US to send troops over there. But the Nigerian government denies there's any ongoing persecution. One thing they do agree on though is that there are serious terror attacks throughout the country. Like over the past 24 hours, 160 were killed by an ISIS-affiliated group.
And yesterday a gunman murdered over a dozen in a neighboring state. Don’t expect widespread American involvement though. They're supposed to just be specialized teams that offer “unique capabilities” to the Nigerians. This comes after the US carried out missile strikes in December and it’s hardly the first time that specialized teams have worked with African nations.
Frankly speaking, the US has had troops throughout the region for a long time. The real difference this time is the selling point. Is America there to stop a Christian Genocide?
Is it there to just help stop terror cells?
In the long run Nigeria probably doesn’t really care how Trump sells it as long as they keep getting weapons and help.
