Samoan Blood, Harbor City Streets: Life at Calipatria Level 4

Growing up in Harbor City, Los Angeles, Kamau navigated the Blood side of Samoan gang culture near Waterfront Piru territory while remaining anchored by his church community. He details a troubled youth involving drinking at twelve, committing robberies at Banning High School, and a stint in the military before a 2004 domestic violence conviction sent him to state prison. Kamau describes the extreme violence on the Level 4 yard at Calipatria State Prison, marked by stabbings and clashes with the Fresno Bulldogs. Now behind bars for fifteen years, he contrasts that volatile past with his current housing at Solano Prison since 2023, where a lower-violence environment allows inmates to develop and run rehabilitative programs.
