Description
Check out this new work-in-progress gameplay demo footage from the upcoming Stranger Than Heaven, developed in the Dragon Engine by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the mastermind creators of the Like a Dragon and Yakuza franchises. This footage has been provided by SEGA and edited by us. Stranger Than Heaven is an ambitious new action RPG open world game set across multiple historical eras in Japan, following protagonist Makoto Daito through a sprawling story that spans five decades. The game also features an absolute all-star cast including Snoop Dogg, Tori Kelly, Ado, and a digitally resurrected Tupac Shakur. Whether you are looking for a gritty narrative about loyalty and betrayal or a brutal street combat title, this game is best compared to Yakuza, Sifu, Sleeping Dogs, and Mafia. These titles perfectly blend the cinematic drama of the criminal underworld with visceral, martial arts-heavy brawling, much like 007 First Light and the upcoming titles John Wick, Acts of Blood, and Blackwood.
✒️ DESCRIPTION
Stranger Than Heaven is a cinematic, third person action adventure game that seamlessly blends brutal martial arts combat, deep historical exploration, music creation, and robust showbusiness management systems. Set across multiple meticulously detailed eras of Japan between 1915 and 1965, the game delivers an epic, decades-spanning narrative shaped by crime, survival, and the glitz and glamour of the entertainment industry.
💥 GAMEPLAY FEATURES AND FIRST IMPRESSIONS
- Criminal Underworld Survival: The narrative follows Makoto Daito after he travels from the United States to Japan in 1915 in search of a fresh start. Alongside his ally Yu Shinjo and a smooth-talking smuggler named Orpheus, Makoto is dragged deep into Kokura’s treacherous criminal underworld. The narrative's emotional weight showcases how the story transitions from a gritty struggle for survival into Makoto and Yu's eventual rise through the exciting yet dark world of showbiz.
- Five Open Cities Across Five Eras: The game features an unprecedented scale, spanning five open world distinct districts inspired by real Japanese cities, each captured in a different historical era. Players will explore the smoke-scorched industrial factories of Kokura, Fukuoka (1915); the tense, naval and yakuza-dominated port of Kure, Hiroshima (1929); the vibrant yet wartime-shadowed entertainment hub of Minami, Osaka (1943); the bustling, post-war seaside tourist boomtown of Atami, Shizuoka (1951); and finally, the chaotic, neon-drenched pleasure district of Shinjuku, Tokyo (1965).
- Management and Music Creation: In a brilliant twist that departs from traditional RGG Studio minigames, showbusiness is core to the gameplay loop. The music creation mechanics feel deeply rewarding: players can literally record ambient sounds from the city streets, sample them to compose original musical tracks, scout talented street performers, and manually produce live shows by arranging musicians and managing performances behind the scenes.
- Dual-Limb Combat System: The combat engine has been completely built from scratch. Moving away from traditional brawlers, the game introduces independent control of Makoto’s left and right sides. This mechanic feels incredibly visceral, allowing players to independently charge attacks, block, and counter-strike using specific arms, tackle thugs to the ground, wield brutal weapons (from knives and hammers to traditional katanas), and execute jaw-dropping, context-sensitive environmental finishers.
