In March 1969, 17-year-old Mary Kay Heese was tragically murdered, her body found in a roadside ditch in Wahoo, Nebraska, with multiple stab wounds. For more than 50 years, her case remained one of the state's most haunting cold cases, leaving her family and community without answers. The only leads from the initial investigation were shoe prints, tire tracks, and witness descriptions of a white-over-blue Chevy seen near the area. With no murder weapon or vehicle ever found, the trail went cold, and for decades, justice seemed out of reach. 🕊️ In November 2024, a grand jury indicted Joseph Ambroz, who was 22 at the time of the crime, for the first-degree murder of Mary Kay Heese. In July 2025, Ambroz, now 79, pleaded no contest to a charge of conspiracy to commit murder. While the plea deal brought a legal conclusion to this 56-year-old case, it also marked a difficult and emotional moment for Mary Kay's surviving family. Our team joined the effort to search for the one piece of evidence that could change everything: the suspect vehicle. We traveled to a local lake where the car was believed to have been submerged. Using advanced sonar technology and high-powered magnets, we began a meticulous search of the murky water, hoping for a discovery that could finally provide a breakthrough. 🚗 After an intensive search, our sonar identified a promising target. Our divers went into the water and recovered several key items from the lakebed: a piece of blue sheet metal consistent with the car's description and a chrome trim piece with identifiable General Motors (GM) part numbers.
