Pakistan’s 27th Constitutional Amendment

The proposed Twenty‑Seventh Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan aims to rewrite key parts of Pakistan’s constitution by altering the military command structure, reshaping the judiciary and curbing provincial autonomy. Among its most notable changes are: Amending Article 243 of the Constitution of Pakistan to abolish the post of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and consolidate command of all armed services under a new role of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) — the same person who serves as Army Chief. Giving lifetime privileges and immunity to senior officers holding five-star ranks (Field Marshal, etc), effectively constitutionally elevating their status. Establishing a new Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) to handle major constitutional disputes, which will shift certain powers away from the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Revising the process of judicial appointments, transfers and the distribution of authority between federal and provincial governments — raising concerns about provincial autonomy and judicial independence.
