The first time we saw her face, we realized this wasn't something that just happened to her one day. Rather, this was the kind of suffering that built over time, while she could do nothing but try to survive it. Large portions of her face, especially around her muzzle and eye, are covered in severe tissue damage. It’s raw and swollen and breaking down, with infection that looks like it’s been spreading for a long time without anyone stepping in. Her skin is deteriorated and angry, like it hurts to even exist in her own body, and you can’t help but picture what that must have felt like on the street. Every blink stinging. Every breath pulling at inflamed tissue. Flies. Dirt. No relief. No way to make it stop. She walks slowly and carefully because her body doesn’t have strength left to waste. Sophie is frightened too, constantly scanning her surroundings like she’s waiting for the next bad thing, but even with all that fear in her, she has remained gentle with people. That’s what gets us. Beneath all the pain and all the exhaustion, she’s still kind. She just looks broken down by life. And her body condition tells you the rest. She’s severely neglected, thin, covered in parasites and ticks, and it’s obvious she hasn’t received proper care in a very long time. This isn’t one injury we can patch up and send her on her way. Sophie needs intensive treatment. Wound care. Antibiotics. Parasite treatment. Fluids. Pain management. Around the clock monitoring while we try to get her stable enough to heal. We cannot let her slip away. She deserves the chance to rest without pain, the chance to feel safe for the first time in a long time, the chance to learn that help can show up before it’s too late.
