Description

Through the ACCESS project in Bangladesh, the FAO Global Innovation Accelerator is testing an approach of introducing sustainable agricultural mechanization (SAM) to smallholders through farmer field schools (FFS). Building on decades of experience in agricultural extension and rural development, the FFS approach facilitates a hands-on, farmer-led, field-based learning process. Farmers in Bangladesh are using it to test out sustainable and scale-appropriate mechanization solutions, generating locally relevant innovations in machinery use and service provision. “As a woman I had never thought we would have access to machinery, nor feel comfortable using it, but because I got the chance to participate in this process, now it feels possible and really exciting.” – Marufa Begum, Aromatic Rice FFS Facilitator This pilot impacts 1,500 farming families, with scope to be scaled up within ACCESS and with other organizations, including the government.
