Five million cattle cakes were infected with anthrax spores and prepared for aerial deployment over German farmland. The idea was simple and horrifying: livestock would eat the bait, civilians would consume the meat, and both animals and people would die from anthrax. Tests conducted on Gruinard Island proved devastatingly effective — all test animals were dead within days. By 1944, the weapons were ready. But after the success of Operation Overlord, the plan was scrapped. Scientists warned that the long-term effects would be catastrophic, leaving farmland contaminated for decades — a warning confirmed by Gruinard Island remaining lethal until its cleanup was completed in 1990.
