Alberta invests $200M to hire 1,400 additional schoolteachers – May 13, 2026

At a news conference in Edmonton, Premier Danielle Smith announces an investment of $200 million to hire more than 1,400 teachers for grades K-9. The funding, guided by Alberta’s Class Size and Complexity Cabinet Committee, will support schools facing the highest pressures of student overpopulation. She is joined by provincial Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides, and school board presidents Colleen Holowaychuk (Elk Island Public Schools) and Sandra Palazzo (Edmonton Catholic Schools).
