Kernig's Sign Positive vs Negative Meningitis Examination Nursing Assessment

Kernig's sign explained: positive vs negative meaning for Kernig's sign. What is Kernig's sign, and what does it assess? To assess for Kernig's sign, place the patient in the supine position. Bend (flex) the hip and knee joint at roughly 90 degrees, and then slowly extend the knee. If the patient experiences pain or resistance to the knee extension, it is considered a positive Kernig's sign. If there is no pain or resistance, it is considered a negative Kernig's sign. This is sometimes done when a patient has suspected meningitis.
