Description
More from one of my top 10 wildlife experiences EVER. We were surrounded by hundreds of curious beluga whales and were able to hear them on the hydrophone. Their high-pitched squeaks, squeals, clucks, and whistles earned them the nickname "canaries of the sea."
📍 Location: Churchill, Manitoba, Canada
🚤 Tour operator: Lazy Bear Expeditions
Beluga whales are the Arctic’s white-clad chatterboxes, a kind of underwater society with better manners than most people and far more to say about it. Known as the “canaries of the sea,” they fill the frozen silence with clicks, chirps, whistles, and squeals, as if the ocean itself were hosting a very opinionated opera. Their pale skin, flexible necks, and finless backs make them beautifully adapted to life under ice, where they glide through the dark looking like the result of a perfectly sensible design meeting.
And then there’s the melon — that bulbous forehead, equal parts sonar tool and expression machine, which helps them beam sound through the water and somehow still manage to look faintly amused while doing it. They can turn their heads, nod, and swivel with an almost owl-like curiosity, which is useful when your neighborhood is made of sea ice, breathing holes, and things with teeth. In short, belugas are elegant, vocal, and just strange enough to seem like they were invented by someone with a sense of humor. @lazybearexpeditions
