Netanyahu’s Iran War Just Hit A New Shipping Problem

A cargo vessel being hit in Iraq - well away from the Strait of Hormuz - might have just triggered a chain of events Israel will come to regret... Right, so a container ship has been hit. Not a warship, not a base, not one of those military targets that can be hidden behind a uniform, a map and some dead-eyed line from Benjamin Netanyahu about security. A commercial cargo vessel called the MSC Sariska V, stacked with steel boxes, taking two projectiles while it was leaving an Iraqi port. The first came in while the harbour pilot was still standing on the bridge guiding her out, which tells you straight away this was not some military dash through a battle zone under cover of darkness. This was ordinary port movement being dragged into a war. The second struck the crew block moments later and started a fire the crew had to put out themselves. There’s your real-world version of “regional tension.” Men on a working ship, in a port, putting out a fire after someone fired missiles at them. This is Umm Qasr, Iraq’s main commercial port down in the deep south, the narrow strip of coast wedged between Kuwait and Iran, where Iraq gets its access to the Gulf and where ships are supposed to move goods, not become props in Trump and Netanyahu’s regional experiment. There’s a hole punched in the starboard side above the waterline. Clear enough that the video travelled round the world before anyone had a press line ready. MSC, the Mediterranean Shipping Company, the biggest container shipping group on the planet, has confirmed the lot. Crew safe. Ship hit. Twice. And the crew being alive does not make the strike minor. It just means this particular piece of stupidity did not come with a body count attached to it yet. A commercial "cargo ship" was hit by projectiles while leaving an Iraqi port, raising concerns about "maritime security" in the region. This incident highlights the ongoing instability in the "middle east" and its potential impact on international "shipping" and "shipping routes".
