All around the Jewish Quarter, families and communities build beautiful sukkot, temporary huts made of simple materials, open to the sky, decorated with fruit, greenery, and lights. Walking through the narrow alleys, you can hear the sounds of blessings and singing, smell the festive meals, and see people carrying the Four Species: the lulav (palm branch), etrog (citron), hadas (myrtle), and arava (willow). Sukkot, also known as the Feast of Tabernacles, is one of the three great pilgrimage festivals in Judaism, together with Passover and Shavuot. In ancient times, Jewish pilgrims from all over the Land of Israel and beyond would ascend to Jerusalem to celebrate in the Temple. The Torah commands: "You shall rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days." It is a time of thanksgiving for the harvest and a reminder of the forty years when the Israelites lived in temporary dwellings in the wilderness after the Exodus from Egypt. The sukkah symbolizes both human fragility and divine protection. While it is a humble structure, its roof, called the schach, represents faith and trust in God's sheltering presence. Living in the sukkah for a week reminds us that true security and joy do not come from material possessions but from faith, community, and gratitude. In Jerusalem, Sukkot holds special spiritual meaning. It was here, near the Temple Mount, that ancient processions took place, including the joyous Simchat Beit HaShoeva, the Water Drawing Festival, when the priests would draw water from the Pool of Siloam and bring it up to the Temple with music, torches, and dancing. The prophet Zechariah even spoke of a time when all nations would come to Jerusalem to celebrate Sukkot, symbolizing unity and peace. Today, the festival still fills the city with that same spirit. In the Jewish Quarter, sukkot appear on rooftops, balconies, and courtyards. The sound of blessings with the Four Species echoes through synagogues and public squares. It is a powerful experience to see Jerusalem transformed once again into a city of pilgrimage and celebration, a living link between the past, the present, and hope for the future.
