Description
The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is a world-renowned sailing event, defined by courage, endurance and human achievement. In its 80th edition, the Great Race South lived up to its often fearsome reputation, with the 628 nautical miles of ocean racing testing the resilience, resolve and preparedness of crews to the limit. Indeed, more than a quarter of the fleet failed to finish. Against this backdrop, the winners of the two principal prizes thoroughly deserved the plaudits: Min River, winner of the Tattersall Cup for overall victory on time correction under the International Rating Certificate (IRC) system of handicapping, and Master Lock Comanche, first to finish and recipient of the J. H. Illingworth Challenge Cup. Min River’s Jian Lin became the first female skipper to win the race outright, while her boat was the first double-handed yacht to take top honours with the support of crew mate Alexis Loison, who months earlier took overall victory in the Rolex Fastnet Race. Organized by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA), in conjunction with the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, Rolex has partnered this offshore classic since 2002 as part of the brand’s near 70-year relationship with yachting.
