Description
A modern, concepts-based approach to ITF step sparring with Master Mariusz Steckiewicz — challenging tradition and redefining how step sparring is taught and trained.
We are very fortunate to present this outstanding session from Master Mariusz Steckiewicz — a modern, concept-driven look at ITF step sparring that challenges the traditional approach many of us grew up with.
This online class was originally delivered as a live, global two-hour seminar. It has now been carefully edited into a clear, streamlined format of just over one hour, published in two parts on TKDCoaching.com. We strongly recommend watching with a partner so you can actively practise the drills and explore the ideas as they are presented.
Modern Concepts in ITF Step Sparring
Master Steckiewicz has long been known for introducing fresh, practical, and deeply thoughtful ideas into step sparring training. Rather than treating step sparring as a memorised sequence, he focuses on the underlying principles:
• timing
• distance
• body mechanics
• intention
• realism
Throughout the session, he encourages practitioners to view step sparring as a dynamic learning tool. His approach emphasises adaptability, strategy, and the correct execution of fundamental Taekwon-Do techniques under pressure. This makes the material valuable not only for gradings, but for real skill development across all levels.
In Part Two of this online class, Master Steckiewicz expands into more advanced concepts, demonstrating how to evolve step sparring beyond set choreography and into logical attacking and defensive patterns that reflect realistic movement and decision-making.
How I Met Master Steckiewicz
I first met Master Mariusz Steckiewicz in Spain in 2006 at the very first ITF Instructors Convention. We trained alongside each other throughout the weekend, and I also had the pleasure of meeting several other long-time friends, including Master Miko from Finland.
Since then our paths have crossed many times — at international courses, World Championships, and even my trip to Vietnam to umpire at an ITF-sanctioned tournament. Master Steckiewicz has always impressed me with his depth of knowledge, technical insight, and ability to explain ideas with clarity and logic.
A Collaborative Project We Are Proud Of
It is a pleasure to collaborate with Master Steckiewicz and bring some of his best online teaching to TKDCoaching. His sessions offer a refreshing, thought-provoking perspective on ITF step sparring drills, instructor methodology, and the development of technical efficiency.
Whether you are preparing students for their next grading, reviewing your own fundamentals, or wanting to deepen your understanding of structured attack-and-defence, this series provides an excellent technical foundation.
