Description

Summer adventures have started once again for southern tamanduas Yzma and Pacha 🐾 These opportunities for them to explore your Toronto Zoo alongside their Wildlife Care team help stimulate their natural foraging behaviours, especially using their long, slender snouts 👀 Did you know? Tamanduas do not have teeth, and they actually don’t need them! Instead, they rely on their incredibly long tongues (which can reach up to 40 cm) and sticky saliva to catch termites, which they swallow whole. They’re also efficient eaters: when feeding on ants or termites, they can smell the difference between workers and queens, choosing to eat only the workers - and only just enough to avoid depleting the colony, so they don’t have to travel any further for their next meal. While Pacha and Yzma may not be viewable on a daily, consistent schedule, they will be out and about for mini adventures around the Discovery Zone and elsewhere so keep your eyes peeled. As the summer weather continues to shine and during your next Zoo visit, be sure to say hello ☀️
