Bertha Benz was far more than a supportive spouse; she was the first venture capitalist and marketing pioneer of the automotive age. When Karl Benz struggled to commercialize his invention, Bertha recognized that the public viewed the Patent-Motorwagen as a fragile curiosity rather than a practical tool. In August 1888, without official permission or her husband's knowledge, she took her two sons on a 66 mile journey from Mannheim to Pforzheim. This historic drive served as the first rigorous long-distance road test in history. Her technical intuition led to immediate mechanical improvements. When the wooden brakes failed, she asked a cobbler to install leather strips, effectively inventing brake linings. She also used a hatpin to clear a clogged fuel line and her garter to insulate an ignition wire. Upon her return, she suggested adding a third gear for climbing hills, a feature missing from the original design.
