Description

How many cans of diet soda do you drink a day? 1? 10? 100? And how much can you actually drink before it’s a problem? Well, the FDA’s acceptable daily intake says you can have 50 mg of aspartame per kilogram of body weight per day every day, for the rest of your life, with no harmful effects. So, if you weigh 80 kilos, or about 175 lbs, you could eat this much aspartame every day for the rest of your life, and you’d be totally fine. That’s based on decades of research showing that aspartame doesn’t cause cancer, infertility, brain damage or weight gain when consumed at these levels. And to be extra safe, that limit is already set 100 times lower than the lowest dose ever shown to cause harm in animal studies. One can of Diet Coke has 200 milligrams of aspartame – that’s this much. So if you weigh 80 kilos, you’d have to drink… 20 cans of diet soda every day just to hit the safety limit. To reach the doses that harmed animals, you’d need 100 times that... about 2,000 cans, or three bathtubs full of Diet Coke. If you tried to drink that, you’d die from water intoxication long before the aspartame could hurt you.
