I Visited India's CRIMINAL TRIBE : Their Reality Is Worse Than You Think

In the heart of Rajasthan's Thar desert lives a community whose art the world celebrates — but whose people India has forgotten. The Kalbelia. For generations, the men of this nomadic tribe were master snake charmers, pulling the deadliest cobras out of the desert with their bare hands. Their women danced in swirling black ghagras, their bodies moving like serpents to the haunting notes of the been. In 2010, UNESCO declared the Kalbelia folk songs and dances "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity." But behind the global recognition lies a brutal reality. For 3 days, I lived with the Kalbelia community in Jaisalmer. What I documented will change the way you see India's "denotified tribes." After the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 made snake charming illegal, the community lost its centuries-old livelihood overnight. Today, survival means sending their young daughters to dance at resorts, weddings, and tourist functions — children who have never seen the inside of a classroom. What I found in Jaisalmer: – Families living in makeshift deras on the outskirts of villages.
