Byzantine Saints: Apostle Barnabas of the Seventy (11 June)

Holy Apostle Barnabas of the Seventy is commemorated by the Orthodox Church on June 11. Born on the island of Cyprus into the tribe of Levi and originally named Joseph, he became one of Christ's Seventy Apostles and was given the name Barnabas, meaning "Son of Consolation." After witnessing the ministry of Jesus Christ and hearing His divine teachings, Barnabas became a devoted follower of the Savior. Following the Lord's Ascension, he sold his property and laid the proceeds at the feet of the Apostles, holding nothing back for himself. Saint Barnabas played a pivotal role in the growth of the early Church. When Saul of Tarsus—later known as the Apostle Paul—converted to Christianity, Barnabas defended him before the Apostles in Jerusalem and helped establish his credibility among the believers. Together, Barnabas and Paul evangelized throughout Cyprus, Antioch, Iconium, Lystra, Derbe, and many other regions, bringing countless souls to Christ. The Apostle Barnabas was instrumental in the spread of Christianity among the Gentiles and participated in the Apostolic Council of Jerusalem. Following years of missionary work, he returned to Cyprus where he continued preaching the Gospel until he was martyred by stoning around the year 62. Centuries later, Saint Barnabas appeared in visions to Archbishop Anthemus of Cyprus, revealing the location of his relics. His incorrupt body was discovered with a copy of the Gospel of Matthew resting upon his chest, strengthening the apostolic foundation and independence of the Church of Cyprus.
