State of emergency declared for Kaikōura, evacuations ordered | Stuff.co.nz

More residents have been told to evacuate as flooding continues across Kaikōura, where a state of emergency remains in place.⁠ ⁠ Kaikōura District Council says people in the upper Red Swamp area, from Mill Rd through to Red Swamp, are now being evacuated, along with residents in West End, Green Lane and Ludstone Rd.⁠ ⁠ State Highway 1 remains closed north and south of Kaikōura, with motorists being turned around at Mangamaunu. Authorities are urging people not to travel unless absolutely necessary.⁠ ⁠ Officials say the Kōwhai River has breached its banks and crews are building additional stopbanks, while more rain is forecast.
