Description
On Monday, March 2, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) organised a public talk to express solidarity with JNU students. CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat, CPI(ML) leader and MP Dipankar Bhattacharya, Congress leader Mukul Wasnik, and other CPI leaders attended the event. Several JNU professors and a large number of students were also present.
During the programme, teacher association members and speakers strongly criticised the arrest of JNUSU students.
Last week, the JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) had organised a protest march against alleged remarks made by VC Shantishree Dhulipudi Pandit about Dalit students. Following the protest march, 14 students, including three JNUSU office bearers, were arrested by Delhi Police and later sent to Tihar Jail.
Students at JNU have been continuously protesting against the VC, demanding an apology and her resignation. Meanwhile, the JNU administration has expelled all four current office bearers of the student union and the former president for one year.
