The flying gurnard is a bottom-dwelling fish with large, colourful pectoral fins. The fins are a brilliant blue that show when the fish is excited. This flying gurnard is hunting along the bottom of the ocean in Curacao. It uses small appendages that resemble spiny fingers to scrape the sand and rubble to uncover crustaceans, mollusks , and small fish. The appendages are actually part of pectoral fins. This fish has a pectoral fin that is divided into distinctively different parts with different functions. The name is misleading as the fish has no ability to fly or even glide, as a flying fish can.
