Description

Sat 20 June 2026 at Deas island and I'm checking in on the bald eagle nest that's situated at the entrance to the Massey tunnel. Thousands of Delta residents use this route everyday - to work, shop, travel - and we had news this week that the contract has failed and gone back out to tender. This is not good news. When I drive to visit my daughters in Vancouver my eyes immediately go to this tree - as I'm sure many other delta and Ladner residents do too! I'm not any kind of expert on politics or tunnel or bridge construction - but as a Delta resident I know first hand the nightmare of traffic congestion through this tunnel. I've seen the devastation as they're cleared hectares of trees - destroying so much natural habitat - including barred owl and Cooper's hawk nests! This one bald eagle nest is still standing - amid all the construction. There are two baby bald eagles in here - in this plastic strewn nest and the noise must be deafening. We all agree the new tunnel (or bridge) must be built. That isn't in question. We all need this new tunnel on highway 99 - it is a major transportation route - it connects Deltaport, USA to the rest of Vancouver and Canada - but these new developments are disturbing. How much longer is this going to take? I don't know the answer - all I know is that a lot of birds, nature and wildlife that have been seriously impacted by this construction and nothing seems to be getting done - just more mess and excuses. https://bio.link/pacificnorthwestkate
