Description

The fall of Malaya in 1941–42 was one of the fastest and most decisive airpower collapses of the Second World War. In just ten weeks, Allied air forces were overwhelmed by superior Japanese aircraft, flawed assumptions, and a rapidly shifting operational environment. Drawing on firsthand accounts from RAAF personnel, this documentary examines how the air campaign unraveled—from the first strikes at Kota Bharu to the final defence of Singapore—and why control of the air was lost so quickly. Interviewees in this documentary are from The Australians At War Film Archive, and include Clarence Spurgeon (ID: 937), Alan ‘Tex’ Morton (ID: 1334), James Porteous(ID: 164), Edward “Ted” Parker (ID: 1270), and John Bingham (ID: 1342). This is an Australian Military Aviation History Association production, undertaken with the kind assistance of the Department of Veterans' Affairs' Saluting Their Service Commemorations grant.
