The book of Zechariah offers a powerful message of hope and future glory, highlighting the coming of the Messiah. After returning from Babylonian exile, the Israelites faced numerous challenges as they sought to rebuild their faith and community. Zechariah encouraged them with visions of God’s magnificent plan for their restoration. Zechariah 9:9 contains one of the most iconic prophecies about the Messiah: “Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!... See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” This prophecy was fulfilled in the New Testament when Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey (Matthew 21:5, John 12:15), symbolizing His role as the humble yet righteous King. The historical context of Zechariah’s prophecy was a time of hardship for Judah as they struggled to rebuild the temple amid economic challenges and external opposition. Zechariah reassured them of God’s promise: “My house will be rebuilt, and the measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem” (Zechariah 1:16). This promise renewed their confidence in God’s presence and the importance of completing the temple. Zechariah also refers to the Messiah as “the Branch” (Zechariah 6:12), prophesying that He will establish God’s kingdom and bring peace. This prophecy finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who, as both High Priest and King, brought God’s salvation plan to completion. God’s heart is vividly revealed in the book of Zechariah. He desires not just a return to former glory but promises a future of greater glory and peace. As He declared, “The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house” (Haggai 2:9), God continually works to bring about something greater. Zechariah’s message reassures us that God is with us and seeks to display His glory through us. The Holy Spirit speaks through Zechariah even today. How are we reflecting God’s glory in our lives?
