*Maqam Nahawand (مقام النهاوند)*
Maqam Nahawand is described as “the king of maqamat” because of its wide expressive ability. It can convey joy, sadness, seriousness, and deep emotion. It is also called a “leader” among maqamat because it allows smooth transitions to other maqamat and back again with ease.
One of its strongest qualities is its flexibility. A reciter can move from Nahawand into Kurd, Hijaz, Saba, or Bayati and return naturally. Because of this flow and openness, it is described as having smoothness and tolerance between it and other maqamat.
Nahawand was previously known by another name, possibly of Persian or Turkish origin, but the focus is on the performance rather than the name. The name “Nahawand” itself refers to a city in Persia that later became part of Islamic history.
This maqam is loved throughout the Arab world, although each region has its own way of performing it. Even within Egypt, styles may differ from one city to another. It is also used beyond the Arab world, and it was mentioned that it does not contain quarter tones. Because of that, it is not limited to Arab listeners and is comparable to the minor scale used in Western music.
Over time, preferences have shifted. In earlier periods, maqamat such as Rast, Sikah, and Bayati were more common. Today, many imams are heard reciting in Nahawand and Kurd, reflecting changes in taste and culture.
Nahawand is described as wide, rich, and expressive. It gives space for questioning, emphasis, and emotional depth. Because of its openness and strength, it supports the meaning of the verses and allows the reciter to move naturally between different emotional tones.
Disclaimer: This series is meant to introduce the beauty of Maqamat as a tool to enhance recitation, not to replace its foundation. Before focusing on Maqamat, it is essential to learn and preserve proper Tajwid, since correct pronunciation and articulation are an obligation. The Qur’an was revealed for guidance, reflection, and transformation. Its meaning and message must always come before beautifying the voice or focusing on tone. Maqamat have their place, but they should serve the Qur’an and never overshadow its purpose.

*English*
O Allah, guide us among those You have guided,
and grant us well-being among those You have granted well-being,
take us into Your care among those You have taken into Your care,
bless us in what You have given,
and protect us from the evil of what You have decreed.
Indeed, none is humiliated whom You have befriended.
Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted.
