Description

This episode of Bosch TechNuggets is all about precious metal in Bosch spark plugs and why we indulge our spark plugs with this luxury at all. Precious metal on the electrodes makes the spark plug more resistant to spark erosion. This is because each ignition spark tears out a tiny amount of electrode material, creating small craters. Over time, the distance between the electrodes becomes so great that the ignition spark no longer has enough energy to ignite the air-fuel mixture. Precious metal spark plugs were developed for use in turbocharged engines with direct fuel injection, as higher pressures, temperatures and ignition voltages prevail here. Nickel spark plugs without precious metal would wear out far too quickly in such engines. They are a good choice for use in engines with port fuel injection, in which significantly lower temperatures, pressures and ignition voltages prevail. Regardless of whether it is a precious metal or nickel spark plug - every spark plug wears out at some point and must therefore be replaced regularly in accordance with the vehicle manufacturer's instructions.
