The yearly celebration at Sree Kurumba Bhagavathy Temple in Kodungalloor, Thrissur district—popularly known as Kodungalloor Bharani—is among the most renowned and powerful festivals in Kerala. A key ritual of the festival is the Aswathy Kavutheendal, observed on the eve of the Bharani star. On this occasion, the temple premises are awash in red as oracles, or velichappad, clad in crimson attire and carrying ritual swords, enter into a trance and perform ceremonial dances in reverence to the goddess. Both men and women participate as oracles, expressing their spiritual connection to the Mother Goddess by rhythmically striking their foreheads with their swords, creating an intense and awe-inspiring ambience.
Marked by its unrestrained energy and deep-rooted devotion, Kodungalloor Bharani stands as a striking representation of Kerala’s vibrant cultural and spiritual traditions. Setting aside conventional temple norms and rituals, the festival evolves into a dynamic expression of faith, passion, and collective fervour.
