Description
Arakawa Sensei demonstrates the Kyū(急)form of the Sōsho(草書)—also corresponding to Ri(離)—of Monpi-Dachi(門扉太刀), from the Koden(古伝, old transmission) / Koshiki(古式, old style) Yasume-Dachi(安太刀).
This technique suppresses and drives in the opponent’s foot and kote(小手, wrist/forearm) just as they are about to draw the sword, thereby preventing the draw.
It is also known as Kannuki-Dome(閂止め).
The meaning is:
Stop the opponent as though closing a gate and locking it with a kannuki(閂)—a horizontal locking bar.
It is said that in the old teaching scroll, this principle was illustrated in tonbo-e(トンボ絵), a very simple stick-figure-like drawing: before an enemy force advancing toward a castle gate, a defender closes the gate and sets the bar in place, preventing them from entering.
Without drawing one’s own sword, the dispute is brought under control. Moreover, the opponent is prevented from drawing, so even the fact that “a sword was drawn” is erased.
It is said that kata is born from nothingness. This technique returns the matter to nothingness—making the quarrel as though it never happened—and is therefore regarded as an important method embodying the sincere wish for peace.
Though its movement is simple, it is an extremely difficult technique.
