Description
Terrorist-proof gates are likely to be erected across Oxford Street - and could help prevent cyclists riding through its soon-to-be pedestrianised area, The Standard has learned.
London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan’s £150m plan to part-pedestrianise the street and create a “pedestrian plaza” is expected to result in changes on the ground by the end of summer after he gave the formal go-ahead last week.
This will close almost a mile of Oxford Street to all traffic – including buses, taxis, cyclists and pedicabs – between Orchard Street, immediately to the west of Selfridges, and Great Portland Street, to the east of Ikea.
Sir Sadiq has made clear that cyclists will not be permitted to ride through the pedestrianised area, which he hopes will be packed with thousands of shoppers and tourists.
