MGNREGA was not just a welfare scheme. It was a guarantee of dignity, minimum security, and bargaining power for India’s poorest workers. The new framework reportedly reduces guaranteed work days, delays employment for long periods, and shifts the financial burden heavily onto state governments. Earlier, the Centre bore most of the responsibility. Now, with a 60:40 cost-sharing model, many states may simply opt out. The result is predictable. Fewer jobs, lower wages, and workers pushed into cheap, unprotected labour in agriculture and informal sectors. This is not just about removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name. It is about removing assured work. It is about making labour cheaper. It is about taking away dignity from those who need it most. Employment guarantees exist so that poverty does not become a permanent condition. Any policy that weakens this guarantee must be questioned, discussed, and resisted through democratic means.
