The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel carries the Hampton Roads Beltway (Interstate 64) over and beneath Hampton Roads Harbor between the cities of Hampton and Norfolk. The nearby Norfolk Naval Station had a significant influence in the crossing's design - it's 3.5 mile total length instead features a 7,479 ft. tunnel beneath the center navigation channel that also travels up to 108 ft. below the surface. The first span opened in 1957, with its near-identical twin span opening in 1976. A $3.5 billion expansion project at the crossing began in 2020 and is scheduled for completion in 2027. The current project will double the capacity of the crossing by adding two additional parallel tunnels and adjoining approach trestles and will refurbish the original twin tunnels.
