It is often heard in the adhān of Makkah and Madinah, which is why many people connect it deeply with religious identity. However, it is not exclusive to one region. The seven basic sound degrees exist everywhere in the world, but each culture uses them in its own way. Hijaz can combine with other maqamat and create new branches. When it enters into Sikah, it forms Huzam. When it enters Bayati, it forms Shuri. Its character changes depending on how and where it is placed within the scale. This maqam is described as spiritual and full of longing. When recited beautifully, it carries a strong sense of reverence and emotion. It can move between higher and lower tones and can be used to serve the meaning of the verses being recited. The emotional impact also depends on the reciter’s understanding of language, tafsir, and proper expression. Hijaz is known for its wide range and expressive ability. It was clearly mentioned that the original Hijaz scale does not contain a quarter tone. Because of this clarity in its structure, it remains strong and recognizable even when a listener’s emotional state changes. The importance of preparation was also emphasized: reviewing the verses with understanding and reflection helps the reciter perform the maqam properly. Hijaz remains a wide and rich maqam, with further branches and details that can be explored more deeply. Before focusing on Maqamat, it is essential to learn and preserve proper Tajwid, since correct pronunciation and articulation are an obligation. The Qur’an was revealed for guidance, reflection, and transformation. Its meaning and message must always come before beautifying the voice or focusing on tone.
