This video showcases the Eurasian Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus), a large handsome shorebird who breeds in the Arctic tundra and winters on various coastlines across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Oceania region (including Australia). The lone Eurasian Whimbrel was filmed at Boat Harbour Aquatic Reserve (Sydney, Australia) in January 2026. Drone footage from a previous visit during low tide reveals the vital rock platforms. These platforms are resting (aka roosting) and feeding sanctuaries for various shorebirds. Look out for Ruddy Turnstones, Red-necked Stints and Pacific Golden Plovers.
