Description
Moon jellys are abundant jellyfish which can be seen in huge numbers (a smack of jellyfish for your fact of the day!) during the summer. Although given the variabilities of oceanic conditions, we can see them over many other parts of the year too.
The first moon jellies are usually spotted during the early plankton bloom. It’s been a tumultuous start to Spring this year which will have generated a lot of upwelling & nutrients. With daylight increasing, a good period of settled sunny weather should see the ocean bloom into action once again soon!
The small tentacles on moon jellies can’t sting humans so they are quite harmless. Although some say they can irritate sensitive skin - they aren’t on the same level as the lions mane, mauve stinger or man-o-wars!
They are always a popular species to observe during our snorkel trips. You are covered head to toe in neoprene with little skin exposed for any potential sting, so you can observe them in comfort.
