Dogs once played a critical role in exploring Antarctica by hauling supplies, scouting routes, and even saving lives in some of the harshest conditions on the planet. But in 1994, they were banned from the continent over concerns they could spread disease to native wildlife, marking the end of nearly a century of canine involvement in polar missions. A preserved Spratt’s dog biscuit, over 100 years old and recovered from an Antarctic expedition hut, was recently analysed to better understand the diets of sled dogs during early polar exploration. The findings highlighted just how nutritionally inadequate early commercial dog foods were for high-performance working dogs. In this video, we look at how these biscuits shaped the modern pet food industry, why they failed expedition dogs, and what life was really like for the huskies and other breeds that helped humans survive in the coldest place on Earth.
